We’ve reached a monumental community crossroads in Santa Cruz

Will we continue to build over-sized buildings full of luxury apartments, or support housing that is affordable for the working families who power our community?

During my 43 years in Santa Cruz, I graduated college, met my partner on the picket line, and helped raise my two amazing daughters. I worked as a teacher and internship director for Environmental Studies at UCSC. I have been a transparent public figure and community advocate, writing editorials, hosting radio shows, serving as city council member and mayor.

In 2020, a colleague and I were the targets of a recall campaign financed by real estate and luxury-housing-developers. They got what they paid for: the string of soul-less, Silicon Beach high rises, mostly far outside the reach of locals’ pocketbooks.

Some candidates will accept corporate developer dollars. I will not.

As mayor, I will stand up for Santa Cruz: creativity and arts, local control, fair wages, peoples’ housing, a secure water supply, environmental values, public transit, and immigrant rights. People-power is the remedy for corporate greed. Santa Cruz is Not for Sale.
